As a teenager In the early 90's I would drive by Skene Manor on my way to Glenns falls to visit my aunt. At the time all you could see was the clock tower peeking over the tree tops. It was spooky. One summer evening on our way back to VT my boyfriend and I followed the narrow roads up to the manor. It was abandoned. . . We went inside. The floors were buckling from water damage and the woodwork was beautiful. I am very excited to see that this precious gem has been saved. As an adult I am working on my own restoration of a pre civil war Gentleman's farm and cottage.

Hello,
Grandfather, Ernest Dawson, worked @ Champlain Spinners as did Dad also Ernest (Les). They lived @ 55 William St.. When not playing football or messing with ham radio in the early 20's Dad was exploring. He claimed that as boy there was a cave, mine or some such close to the manor. A couple years ago I went looking for it with no luck. Can anyone shed any light? Thanks, Steve |

We stopped by today on our New Year's Day Drive and were intrigued when we saw the house from the town below. We were only able to walk around the house today. I would love to see it in the warmer seasons when it is open and the gardens are in bloom!!

In the 1960's I stopped there for lunch when was returning from Ticonderoga going back to New York City. I was working for International Paper at that time. As I recall part of the bar was where a prior owner was buried. Her will stated something to the effect "that as long as she was above ground she would not leave her home to her husband" so when she died he buried in the house and made part of the bar: this kept her above ground so her husband remained in Skene Manor. As I recall I did see the site at the bar and I thought there was a plack that identified her.
It is an interesting story whether it is true or not. |

Thank you so much for a lovely lunch and very informative tour of "the castle". Your staff was so friendly and provided us with excellent service. We look forward to returning in the future to see more of the restorations.

I grew up in Whitehall on William St. My Aunt & Uncle Ed & Adele Austin lived in the Skene Manor or a while. My father Bob and his brother Don Austin, helped Ed remove the insides of the clock during the depression. I remember the stories they told of it being haunted too. It was always a gorgeous "castle" on the hill.

I have a nice professional photo of Skene Manor in my living room, which I came upon at an outdoor art show in Mass. a few years ago. Imagine my surprise when I was browsing through and there it was, a place I knew so well having grown up on Williams St. I spoke to the artist, and he was surprised that I knew the photo was not taken where it appeared, as the photgrapher would have had to have wings!
Wonderful job of restoration and the "Gilly Room" (my father's cousin). |

So many memories here. My now husband took me here for our first date. His Aunt was the cook there at the time(Glady Ballard). What a wonderful meal and great memories. We are now celebrating our 25th anniversary next week. Just had to say how fond I am of the castle as we call, every time we go by it to see family I get a big smile.
